VEGA SCANNER : Powerful Open Source Web Application Vulnerability Scanner

1.   Vega is one free and open source scanner and testing platform to test the security of web applications by Subgraph, an open source security software company. Vega can help find and validate SQL Injection, Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), inadvertently disclosed sensitive information, and other vulnerabilities. It is written in Java, GUI based, and runs on Linux, OS X, and Windows.Vega includes an automated scanner for quick tests and an intercepting proxy for tactical inspection. The Vega scanner finds XSS (cross-site scripting), SQL injection, and other vulnerabilities.

Main Features:

    Automated Crawler and Vulnerability Scanner
    Consistent UI
    Website Crawler
    Intercepting Proxy
    SSL MITM
    Content Analysis
    Customizable alerts
    Database and Shared Data Model

2.   So to launch Vega in Kali Linux...go to Web Applications then to Web Vulnerability Scanners and select Vega

Vega will flash an introduction banner and display a GUI

Vega has Scanner and Proxy tabs as u play with the interface as seen below. To use Vega as a Scanner, click on the Scanner tab , click on Scan on the top-left corner and select to start new scan
You will see an input field asking for the target. The screen shot tested below is targeting www.thesecurityblogger.com. Choose target and click on Next:

Concluding XP getting Stronger by the Day @ Banks & ATMs still swear by it.

1.   Microsoft XP...the OS that was a milestone and turning point for the Microsoft company in many ways was given 8 Apr 2014 as the last date of survival ie after about 14 years of being in business, support for Windows XP will end on April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows XP. So PCs running Windows XP after April 8, 2014, should not be considered to be protected...but is it that easy for a typical user to just see off XP and take on a newer OS?....leave aside the typical user ...would it be possible for the corporates to do it so easily???...alass!!! NAAA....

2.  Microsoft though had given early warnings as early as 2007 about the end of life support for XP OS, but in fact the surprising fact coming up vide various sources is that currently most bank machines (95% of ATMs in the world) use Microsoft XP (OS) in their cash machines and with the date nearing fast it seems like herculean to replace all as per the time line.So after repeated request from across the globe from leading bank vendors including big UK banks such as Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, Royal Bank of Scotland etc ,Microsoft has agreed to provide antimalware signatures for the operating system through July 15, 2015 and just for info that’s not the same as software patches, but does help consumer and business security programs identify malware on the system. The original end of support date of April 8, 2014 still stands. Even for this the banks might pay up to $100 million (KES. 8.5 billion) each to keep their Windows XP support, combined with the costs to upgrade their ATMs to a more recent version of the OS. Microsoft does offer what it calls “Custom Support” for large business that includes updates for legacy programs....

3.   Thus XP , though will be soon bidding bye for all home users but the fact is that it has proved it self yet again in terms of the swollen dependency that too pan global...that only proves yet again that XP still has a large large following.....

Twitter Session Cookie Vulnerability

1.    This one is pretty easy to show and understand..but the only thing not understandable is the fact that it actually exists even today.....so this one is about Twitter Session Cookie Vulnerability.I got to know of this at Null's delhi meet where Rishi Narang (http://www.wtfuzz.com/ )gave this demonstration of which I made a video cast subsequently and uploaded it here at your tube.

2.    In brief it goes like this...u login into your twitter account,an auth_token cookie is generated in the crowd  of various other cookies. Now this cookie only will be able to log you in your twitter account from anywhere across the web....simply watch how to exploit!!!!

3.   Thanks Rishi Narang @ http://www.wtfuzz.com/

India developing own Secure OS to strengthen Cyber Security

1.   India is developing own secure OS to strengthen cyber security.Got this news piece from here. The key points from the news are :

- India's own secure operating system to strengthen cyber security.

- 150 Engineers across the country have already been working on creating an Indian OS for over one year and a half.

- According to Times of India ,it will be ready in next three years.

- There is no foreign involvement in this project. It is purely build by Indians.

2.   It is indeed heartening to know all this...but whats the point? Does the team of 150 engineers and the vision behind think they are creating a secure and 100% fool proof OS?...The moment it is released...there will be many vulnerabilities that will be gradually known...and then the same cat mouse race will being like with any other OS..so whats the point of starting from scratch?....will it not be wise to securify existing opensource available and invest in something like improving upon existing resources?.....Case in point, the DESI OS....will lag behind in terms of experiences gained by Windows and other OS Communities who have been in the game for years...........who have been improving daily for so many years!!!like Fedora...Ubuntu...they have been improving for last so many years to reach a level like as on date available to us....

3.  Although it is a veri good thought to have a desi OS....but I sincerely feel that we are slightly late in realizing the need of a desi OS...

The weak password problem : Now solved????

1.    We are part of the first phase of IT revolution across the globe where every thing is happening....methods to secure...methods to hack....stronger and powerful servers....patching vulnerabilities....fighting malware....analysing stuxnets genre...and what not....every thing is happening.....now the following text (org from http://lanl.arxiv.org/abs/1103.6219) opens another dimension to make the passwords secure.....

"Vulnerabilities related to weak passwords are a pressing global economic and security issue. We report a novel, simple, and effective approach to address the weak password problem. Building upon chaotic dynamics, criticality at phase transitions, CAPTCHA recognition, and computational round-off errors we design an algorithm that strengthens security of passwords. The core idea of our method is to split a long and secure password into two components. The first component is memorized by the user. The second component is transformed into a CAPTCHA image and then protected using evolution of a two-dimensional dynamical system close to a phase transition, in such a way that standard brute-force attacks become ineffective. We expect our approach to have wide applications for authentication and encryption technologies."

Get Paid to Hack GOOGLE

1.    Google has made it official now vide which Google willl pay $500 and $3,133 to people who discover security vulnerabilities in its websites and online applications.......Google calls the program "experimental," but says it gives security researchers new incentives to report Web flaws directly and in real time to Google's security team thereby improving upon zero day exploit matters.
2.    This provisions  Google a chance to fix the vulnerabilities before it is exploited the way it should be. So, in order to qualify, security researchers must privately disclose new flaws to Google first before they go public with their research. Thus depending on the extent and scale of vulnerability made known to google,so will be the prize money awarded....And Google says that participants shouldn't use automated tools to search for flaws

Biggest release of Patch update by MICROSOFT

1.    Patches by MS to be released today are said to be the biggest and largest batch of updates by Microsoft since Oct 2003.According to Microsoft, this batch will be the LARGEST in its history with no less than 16 security updates designed to address a total of 49 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer, MS-Office and the software giant's .NET Framework.

2.    All this effort and size of the patches by MS reflects how vulnerable each one of us remains to the hacking and leak of personal info in wrong hands....the batch of updates will include Windows 7 critical updates, updates for Internet Explorer, MS -Office 2010.And all those happy using the pirated copies of OS across remain as vulnerable as they are already....
